Pickens County Courthouse

The Pickens County Courthouse was built in 1877. It is famous for a ghostly image that can be seen in one of its garrett windows, claimed to be that of freedman Henry Wells.

According to a common version of the story, Wells was arrested for burglary and arson. A flash of lightening captured his terrified expression as he looked upon a gathered mob from the garret window, who then lynched him. He cried that if he was innocent, he would return to haunt them, and the resulting face is said to be testament to that curse.
