Private Residence

On 23rd December 1973, a private 3-storey Victorian residence in a north Portland neighbourhood was the scene of a domestic murder and suicide. Billy Hood shot and murdered his estranged wife, Marles, before turning the gun on himself. Marles had gone their to stay with the Bellanger family in an attempt to get away from her abusive husband. He spared the Bellangers and his own 5 children.

In the early 1980's, the house came up for sale and it was purchased by the Brown's in late 1985 after remaining vacant for some time. Approximately 18 months after moving in, the Brwn's began to experience activity that they regarded as proof that their home was haunted.

The apparition of a female would allegedly tuck the Brown's youngest daughter into bed. The same child described a man standing nearby who would just watch. Areas of intense cold were reported; electrical items were unplugged from sockets; the TV and radio would turn on of their own accord; voices, knocking and footsteps were heard.

Shanghai Tunnels

The Old Portland Underground, better known locally as the Shanghai Tunnels, is a group of passages that run beneath Portland. According to sources, they are mostly located underneath the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood. The tunnels connect to the main business area, linking the basements of several hotels and taverns to the Willamette River waterfront. It is rumoured that they were used to press gang - or "Shanghai-ing" - unsuspecting victims into crewing shipping. However, some historians have stated that there is no actual evidence for this occuring in the tunnels.

The tunnels do have a haunted reputation. Reports suggest that unusual lights and the apparition of a woman has been seen, and the smell of perfume reported. Other phenomena include audible effects that range from whispers, crying, moaning and footsteps. Others have reported feeling dizzy and unwell whilst in the tunnels.

The tunnels are open for tours, and some visitors have claimed to have had their clothing tugged.

Some amateur ghost hunters have claimed to have obtained EVP's and photgraphic anomalies whilst "investigating" the location.

Pictured left is a view of the tunnels.
